Zinc is a micromineral found in all of the body’s tissues and is part of, or activates, over 200 enzymes. A lot of zinc is found in the skin and coat where zinc is needed for growth. Zinc is found in high levels in the iris as well as being needed by the immune system to function optimally. Zinc is involved in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. The body’s need for zinc increases with pregnancy, lactation and hard work.
Zinc deficiency has been shown to result in hoof damage, hair loss and skin problems on the legs and head.
The risk of giving horses too much zinc is small, but excess can inhibit the absorption of copper.
