Thiamine, also known as Vitamin B1, is a coenzyme that acts as an activator in the metabolism of carbohydrates, among other nutrients. It plays a pivotal rolse in specific muscle and nerve functions, and is crucial for the body’s energy production. Additionally, thiamine is vital for the body’s effective management of stress. Thiamine is often administered to horses experiencing patellar locking (locking of the hind knees).

Supplementing Vitamin B1 is often necessary for high-performance horses or those undergoing a change in their diet. Due to its water-soluble nature, the risk of overdosing on Vitamin B1 is minimal. The body efficiently excretes any excess through the urine.
