QUESTION:

Why do some horses get loose stools when they eat haylage while they do better on regular hay?

ANSWER:

This is an interesting question that is currently being investigated in a large research project at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). There are several theories, but there is still more to learn. If a horse develops digestive issues from haylage, it is often best to switch to hay instead.

If that is not possible, we recommend using Fiberplex, which adds beneficial substances and prebiotics for the gut flora. Diamond V may also be an option. We eagerly await the results from the SLU studies and hope they will bring new knowledge that can help all horses with this issue.
