Preparing for Foaling – How to Support the Mare

As foaling approaches, a lot is happening in the mare’s body. Hormonal changes, increased nutritional demands, and the start of milk production make the final weeks of pregnancy both sensitive and important. As a horse owner, there’s much you can do to give both mare and foal the best possible start.

Strengthening the mare before foaling

During the last 4–6 weeks of pregnancy, the need for certain nutrients increases significantly – especially those that support immune function, muscle performance, and tissue recovery.

Key nutrients in late pregnancy:

  • Vitamin E & Selenium – support muscle function and the immune system. Deficiencies can negatively affect both mare and foal.
  • Magnesium – may help support muscle relaxation and promote a more balanced temperament.
  • B-vitamins – particularly important if the mare seems tired, underweight, or is shedding poorly.
  • Zinc & Copper – important for healing processes and immune function.

Many horse owners choose to add targeted supplements during these final weeks to support the mare both before and after foaling.

Practical preparations

  • Closely monitor the mare during the final weeks – especially if it’s her first foal.
  • Make sure she has a clean, calm, and safe place to foal.
  • Watch for udder development and loosening of the pelvic ligaments – these can be signs that foaling is near.
  • Prepare a simple foaling kit and keep it easily accessible.

Recovery starts immediately

Recovery begins right after foaling – involving the uterus, energy levels, and muscles. Continuing to support the mare with the right nutrition after foaling can help her recover faster and promote a healthy start to lactation.
