Replenish electrolytes after sweating
Horses subjected to heavy exertion lose vital salts and fluids through sweating. To restore these levels, the addition of electrolytes is recommended, which balances the salt content in the body. Electrolytes, which are essentially ions in an aqueous solution, play a critical role in maintaining the body's ability to transport water between cells.
During intensive workouts, horses can lose significant amounts of fluid. Anna Jansson at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU, in Uppsala, has shown in studies that a horse during a simulated trot race in 35°C heat can lose as much as 12 kg of fluid. This often leads to an electrolyte imbalance and potential dehydration, which can result in various health problems if not addressed.
In addition to regular salt, horses also lose other important substances when they sweat. For the best results, horses should therefore be given a specific electrolyte blend that compensates for these losses. These blends prevent dehydration, stimulate fluid intake and appetite, and help the horse recover quickly after intense sessions.
